TY Thursday: Thanking Donors is Good for Your Health

How are you feeling, reader? I hope you’re safe at home, and keeping your distance while wearing a mask when you go out.

If you show symptoms of the coronavirus, don’t be bashful, call your doctor. If you need food, or other help, don’t be shy, call your neighbor. We can help one another.

There’s one other thing you can do to stay healthy, and it may surprise you.

Thank your donors.

A lot of people aren’t used to working from home. Seeing the same four walls every day. Being cooped in with family, and being kept out of our usual social communities. Doing everything online.

In these circumstance, it’s not selfish–it’s vital–to do things that make us feel happy. Mental health boosts our immune systems, and gratitude helps renew and replenish our mental health.

As reported in Inc. magazine, “A team of researchers out of Indiana University led by Prathik Kini recruited 43 subjects suffering from anxiety or depression. Half of this group were assigned a simple gratitude exercise — writing letters of thanks to people in their lives — and three months later all 43 underwent brain scans.”

The results?

The participants who’d completed the gratitude task months earlier not only reported feeling more gratefulness two weeks after the task than members of the control group, but also, months later, showed more gratitude-related brain activity in the scanner.

And their attitude of gratitude is linked with happiness, optimism, calmness, willpower, and other psychological benefits.

“Something as simple as writing down three things you’re grateful for every day for 21 days in a row significantly increases your level of optimism, and it holds for the next six months. The research is amazing,” Harvard researcher and author Shawn Achor told Inc.com.

Be good to yourself: say “thank you”

Writing thank-you letters is a way to express gratitude. We know donors want it. We know nonprofits benefitHappy grateful from it. And now, we know it’s a work task you can carry you that will actually be good for you.

So, why not try it? Write three thank-you letters every day for the next twenty-one days. You’ll be making your outlook brighter AND making donors feel appreciated. A happy result!

Fundraising Tuesday: A Letter to Nonprofits

I want to speak to you from my heart.

I went into nonprofit consulting because you do great work. Each day, every day, you give your time, your creativity, and your compassion toward making out world a better place.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, your work is especially needed. And yet, I worry that after this pandemic, many nonprofits will be severely injured. Some may even have to close.

Why?

Because our sector was not prepared.

I am not talking about preparation for the disease. It’s not the lack of face masks or surgical gloves–or even the learning curve involved in trying to do all our work online–that’s going to do many nonprofits in.

We are seeing right now, if we didn’t before, that we cannot rely on the federal government to get us through the crisis. But we could not rely on them before the pandemic, either.

The same is true for state governments. Some nonprofits are better off than others because our governors and legislators have more foresight than those in other states. All states have to balance their budgets, however, and with their economies flatlined, they don’t have money to spare.

Foundations? I agree with Vu Le of the Nonprofit AF blog: foundations could be helping out more right now by turning all the grants they’ve given for this year into unrestricted money, so you could spend it where the need is greatest.

Mostly, however, they are not doing that. And next year, they will have less investment income. Unless they dip into their endowments, we will see less money from foundations, too.

The only ones that nonprofits can rely on are our loyal donors. And we have too few of them.

You can read the statistics as well as I can. From year to year, the percentage of first-time donors who give again to our nonprofits is getting smaller and smaller.

The most consistent donors are people in the Baby Boom generation who have given over and over again for years. There were always going to be fewer of us Boomers as time went on. Covid-19 is taking some of us (and our parents, and a few of our children) before their time.

It’s vital to nonprofits to create loyal donors–and keep the ones you have. The organizations that have made good friends of their donors over a period of years are the ones that are going to survive the pandemic. Others will be casualties.

So why are we ignoring our loyal donors?

We acknowledge their gifts online immediately, but we sound like robots instead of human beings.

We send thank-you letters by mail, but we sound self-important instead of grateful.

Most important: in our communications between asks, and in our asks, we sound like we are talking to a crowd. We give no indication that we know who this donor is, and what he, she, or they care about. (Including their pronouns, and even their names!)

If we had spent the past few years:

  • Collecting the right contact information for each donor
  • Surveying them about their interests
  • Segmenting our mail and email lists
  • Sending messages to each segment based on what they want to hear about
  • Telling stories about why their support is needed
  • Making the donor the hero of the story, and
  • Helping them feel that donating to you is how they do the good things they want to do in the world, and that they couldn’t do it without you (not the other way around)

…then we would not fear the pandemic or the recession that will follow. We would have donors we could trust.

I want to suggest that it’s not too late.

There are a lot of things we can’t do while social distancing. We’ve cancelled Spring galas and fundraising events already, and a lot of those road races and golf tournaments are just not happening this year.

Please, give yourself some credit. You are doing the best you can under difficult circumstances. It’s time to sit back, take a breath, and look at what you can actually do.

What if you put the time you would have spent planning events into creating loyal donors?

Maybe you never had the time to go through your database before and separate it into people who support your nonprofit because of this reason or that reason. Now is the perfect time to get started.

Maybe you don’t know enough about the donors to segment the list as you’d like. Give donors a call and ask, first, “How are you doing? Can we help?” and second, “What made you support this nonprofit in the first place, and why do you keep on supporting it?” Write it down!

Then, hold them close. Communicate more than you ever have before.

And that way, when we come out the other side of this global disease, your nonprofit will have better, closer, more loyal friends than you ever had before.

Where to Give, in the Time of Coronavirus

asking questionA friend recently asked, “Where are the best places for me to be donating right now?” She didn’t say it, but “in this time of coronavirus Covid-19” was implied. That’s all anybody was talking about on March 17, 2020.

Here’s how I would answer my friend’s question, as a nonprofit consultant:

Keep Giving Where You Give

If you’re a big supporter of the symphony, the mosque, or the Girl Scouts, don’t stop! Those organizations still need your donations as much as they ever did, even if they’re not specifically dealing with Covid-19.

Be strategic. Too often, well-intentioned people read the latest headlines and give their donations for disaster relief, only to realize later they don’t have the money to give to their regular charities.

Make sure you have a budget for your annual giving, and then, if you can, give to organizations addressing the current crisis on top of that.

Provide Services to the Most Vulnerable

An epidemic is like a spotlight on the inequalities of society. The people who are always vulnerable are the first ones to be hit, and hit the hardest.

  • People who can’t afford to stay home, or have no home.
  • People whose home isn’t safe, because their abuser lives there.
  • People whose “home” is a prison or a detention camp for undocumented immigrants.
  • People who have no health insurance, or people whose policies have such a high deductible they might as well have none.
  • People with no living relatives to check up on them.
  • People with the kinds of disabilities that make them depend on caregivers who may or may not show up.
  • People whose relatives have abandoned them because they’re LGBTQ+.
  • People whose healthcare will be questionable because they’re LGBTQ+ and doctors don’t know what to do with them.
  • People whose healthcare will be questionable because they’re Black or other people of color, and doctors don’t know what to do with them or don’t care.

Some of the best places you can give right now are organizations that serve these highly vulnerable populations. Many of them have been doing good work for years, and in the crisis, their resources will be stretched and strained. Look for groups that have been around for a while and have a good reputation.

Support Advocacy for a Fairer, Safer Society

Let’s be clear: services are fine, but they will never be enough.

Even in ordinary times, the nonprofit organizations I know, love, and work for are struggling to keep up with demand.

We cannot fix homelessness by keeping this one family from being evicted. We cannot end racism in healthcare by making sure this one mother gets proper postnatal care. It takes collective action. It takes policy. It takes government.

So, if you are trying to figure out where your donation dollars will do the most good, by all means keep supporting your regular causes, and certainly, give to organizations that serve the populations hardest hit in a crisis.

But please, for the love of God, direct some of your donation money to groups that are advocating for policies that will create more equality and make us all safer.

Policies that Help All of Us

We know that living in a poor community makes you less likely to live a long life. New evidence suggests that living in a community with high income inequality also seems to be bad for your health.  (Margot Sanger-Katz in the New York Times, 2015)

Income inequality is not just bad for poor people’s health. It’s bad for all of our health.

So, policies that reduce inequality are better for all of us. Whether that’s raising the minimum wage, providing a universal basic income, imposing a wealth tax on the 1%, or making health care and free college education for all the standard in our supposedly advanced society, or some mix of all of those, adopting those policies would make life safer and fairer.

Right now, you can be washing your hands several times an hour, but if you go pick up a prescription and the person behind the counter is working sick–because they literally cannot afford not to work every day–you’re at risk.

Paid sick leave for pharmacy workers (and the people who cook your takeout food–mostly immigrants where I live–and the ones who do day care for your toddler–mostly women) means more safety for you, too.

You can find organizations that advocate for those policies. You can donate to them. Right now would be an excellent time to do that.

(And you can also donate to candidates who would make sure government tells the truth and takes effective action. Because that is the most important thing we need, for this crisis and the next.)
