Valentine’s Day is for Suckers

My wife and I decided years ago that Valentine’s Day is for suckers. No Valentine's Day

Think about it. This week, candy and flowers will cost more than they do any other time of the year. Restaurants will push special meals with more food than you can eat and more expensive wine than you would choose.

Businesses make big bucks because people think putting out a lot of money one time a year is the way to show their love.

Rona and I are romantic, but we are not suckers. The ways we show our love all year round count more than what we do one day a year. And we do not let Hallmark tell us when to say “I love you.”

But what about your nonprofit?

The calendar may be playing you for a sucker, too.

  • Are you ignoring your donors all year round until the day you send them an “annual appeal”?
  • Are you then expecting them to show you the love on December 31, just because in the U.S. that’s the last day to get a tax deduction for the year?

Lots of nonprofits work hard on making that appeal letter just right, as if it were a Valentine’s Day bouquet. But you can't neglect your donors all year and expect one romantic gesture to make it all right. Share on X You have to show some donor love all year long.

Here’s a plan to make your donors love you in just one year. No, it’s not candy and flowers! Good relationships take good communications.  I’ll help you figure out where you can spend your nonprofit time and money that will matter most to the donor.

Because that’s what you want, right? Not to do the same tired things the same time of year. You want every day to be Valentine’s Day for your donors and you.

What’s Your Nonprofit’s Campaign Story?

There’s an election going on, and your nonprofit organization is one of the candidates.

You’re competing for volunteer time.  You’re competing for donor money.  Everyone in your community can choose from a slate of good causes and “cast their vote”–for you, for a similar organization, or for a completely different cause that also appeals to them.

You need name recognition to win.  No one will vote for you if they don’t know who you are.  But how do you make sure people hear about you, and remember your name?

Tell stories.

Tell stories that dramatize the problem you’re trying to solve.  Tell stories that give people hope that there are solutions.  Give them a chance to be the hero of the story by giving you their time or money.

When they choose between you and other organizations, make sure they know your name.  Then you’ll have a chance to get their vote.

The Worst Way to Lose a Donor

Does your organization care whether I live or die?

If your donors can’t instantly answer “yes,” you’re in trouble. So, the way you handle your data is not a technical issue. It’s vital to your relationship. Vital–literally, as in life or death.

My friend Rosie just wrote an angry note to the university her son attends:

I would be much more likely to feel “excited… for the start of the school year” for my son, or even to respond positively to the rah rah e-mail that you just sent me if you hadn’t addressed it to me and my late ex-husband!

We were divorced. That’s in your records. We have not shared a home for more than 9 years, let alone an e-mail address. And he has been deceased for 6 years (That’s in your records, too). He has not been alive the entire time our son has been a college student.

I have been through this with you before. Last time, you assured me that it would never happen again. Grrr.

Rosie is not a donor yet. She’s still struggling to put her son through school on a single parent’s income.

But when the university asks her for money in the future, what do you think she will remember? The great classes her son took, or the anguish she felt every time she opened an email and saw the name of the man she married, divorced, and buried?

To you, it’s just a database. To your donors, it’s what you think of them. Make sure you treat your data with the same respect you’d treat a person.
