How NOT to Market Your Services

My wife, realtor Rona Fischman, was listening to a webinar when her phone began to ring. She didn’t recognize the number, but it might have been another realtor calling about a transaction in progress.  She decided to answer.

“Hello, this is [fill-in-the-blank] Media calling about your website.”

Not the reaction you want.

Rona groaned. This company had been leaving messages on her voicemail for days.  “I’m listening to a webinar right now. If my website is on fire, tell me so.  Otherwise, call me back after the webinar.”

“Do you know that half the links on your home page are broken and that people who click on them will see 404 errors?”

“No, I didn’t know that. After the webinar, I will check on it.”

In fact, Rona checked her website–on Chrome, IE, and Firefox, just to make sure–and there were no broken links.  Later, she received an email from the company that had called her.  They apologized for “startling” her and listed several other “problems” with her website.  Some of them did not exist.  Others are not problems for Rona because her business model does not require a huge volume of clients.

In short, they lied to her and never took the time to find out what she really might need.

This is the internet age.  Wouldn’t it be easy to spend a little time looking at Rona’s website and finding comments about her on Angie’s List, etc., and figure out where you could really add value to her communications?

Whether you are out to make a profit or looking to recruit support for your good cause, you owe it to yourself to treat the client with respect and personalize your message.

10 easy ways to communicate better in 2015

It’s a new year.  Here are ten resolutions that every organization should make to improve their communications in 2016.

  1. Google yourself. What are the first things people see about you? Would you support the group you see on screen?
  2. Take charge of your brand. Create your own reputation through the news you make and the stories you post.
  3. Cultivate local reporters.  They work too hard: if you feed them human interest stories and photos, they’ll be grateful.
  4. Everyone in your organization speaks for you.  What are they saying to their friends? Do they have stories to tell your supporters?
  5. Your website: keystone of all your communications.  Ask an outsider to click through it. Is it easy to navigate? Informative? Fun?
  6. Facebook is a party, not a meeting.  Find ways to get your fans talking with each other.  They’ll come back more often and like you better.
  7. Which social media should your group use?  Depends.  Who do you want to reach?  Where do they go when they’re online?
  8. Horror movie: “I mail to dead people.” In January, take people off your postal and email lists if you haven’t heard from them since 2013.
  9. Photos: not just for breakfast any more. Your readers want to consume photos at every meal, including online posts.
  10. Your good name is your most valuable asset.  What’s it worth to you?  THAT’S the return on investment for your communications.

What a Toddler Taught Me about Communicating

My nineteen-month-old niece was crying as if her heart would break.

What is she saying now?

Her heart was fine, actually.  It was her grandfather’s heart that was cracked open for a triple bypass, in a hospital an hour away.  So her mother had gone to the hospital, and I was spending the day taking care of her.  Alone.

“Honey, what do you want?” I pleaded with her.  And I thought, “If only she could tell me what she’s thinking.”

But she could.  She did tell me.  And your audience is telling you too.  Look and listen to what they do online, and you will find out what they want.

How does a toddler tell you what she wants?

Pointing.  My niece knows the milk is in the refrigerator, the bananas are on the table, and the TV remote is on the couch.  If she points at the table, you know she wants to eat a banana.  If she hands you the remote, it’s time for Bubble Guppies or Sesame Street.

Your audience knows where to find what they want online.  If they’re visiting your website or social media pages often, there’s something there they want.  So, find out where they’re pointing!  The pages, posts, or tweets they visit will tell you what will keep them coming back again and again.

Making happy noises.  My niece laughs, squeals, and talks excitedly in full sentences in a language I don’t understand when something makes her happy.

Your audience likes, shares, retweets, or recommends the content they like the best.  So, listen to their communications with other people to find out what kind of content will keep them gurgling with delight.

Keeping to a routine.  My niece gets up around the same time each day.  Five hours later, it’s time for her nap.  If it’s around 2:00 or 3:00 in the afternoon and she’s rubbing her eyes, I know it’s time to take her to her crib.

Your audience is online at certain times more than others.  Find out their pattern and you’ll know when to post.  They like reading more serious articles at certain hours and they go for distraction at other hours.  Keep track of that and you”ll know what content you should post when.

Listening to You

Oh, my brother-in-law is fine.  Thanks for asking!  And my niece is now three years old, and still adorable (as is her baby brother).

So on this blog, I’m listening to you as intently as I listened to my niece. When most of you readers are online,  in the before-work, after-lunch, and early-evening hours, that’s when I’m posting. And I hope this story made you as happy as a child.
