TY Thursday: Because of You

April 16, 2020 by Dennis Fischman Leave a Comment

My friend Joan reads this blog religiously, and she’s always on the lookout for nonprofits that are taking my advice. Here’s a thank-you email that Joan has shared with us all.

It’s not an ideal thank-you.

  • The “On behalf of” opening line is a waste of words.
  • The sentence that includes both donors and people who included the organization in their prayers shows that they don’t know which group she belongs to–they haven’t segmented their list.
  • And as Joan notes, the idea that she has made this particular nonprofit “a priority” is a sign that they don’t know her very well yet.

Four things make this TY stand out:

  1. The From: line is personal. It’s a message from a particular person, not an organization or, even worse, an auto-answering program.
  2. The photo is personal. It puts a face to the name, so Joan can picture Ralph McCloud saying the words that follow, directly to her.
  3. The salutation is personal. It says “Dear Joan,” not “Dear Friend.”
  4. The message is personal. “What a blessing you are to us” is the kind of thing one Catholic would say to another. By repeating that message in the Subject line, in the photo, and in the body of the email, Catholic Mobilizing Network emphasizes what Joan and Ralph and CMN have in common.

Over all, the message has a recurring motif: “Because of you.”

CMN is working hard to make Joan the hero of the story. In your thank-you letters and emails, are you telling your donors “because of you”?

Blessing you are to us

Dear Joan,

On behalf of Catholic Mobilizing Network’s Board of Directors, I want to say thank you.

Whether you supported CMN financially this Christmas season, or included us in your intentions and prayers, it is because of you that CMN is able to thrive in its mission to end the death penalty and promote restorative justice.

What a blessing you are to us.

We live in a time where it seems like human dignity is under attack on many fronts. As a community of believers, we are called to respond with justice and mercy. But this can be a challenging commission, especially when our time, energy, and financial capacity are all stretched thin.

I know there are a lot of worthy causes out there; that is why I am grateful that you have made CMN a priority in your end-of-year giving.

Your support of CMN affirms your bold commitment to upholding the human dignity of all people — including even those who might have caused or suffered great harm.

Because of you, CMN is able to pursue a criminal legal system that values life, hope, and healing. And for that, I am deeply grateful.

Thank you,

Ralph McCloud, Treasurer
CMN Board of Directors

TY Thursday: How to Create a Repeat Donor

December 19, 2019 by Dennis Fischman Leave a Comment

“They must have been listening to you!”

My friend Joan used to work in the nonprofit sector before she retired. She still takes a keen interest in the mail and email you send her. Often, sad to say, she passes along examples of really bad nonprofit communication.

I’m happy Joan and I can share an example of what TO do, instead.

Subject: [RAICES] Thank you for your donation

thank you from RAICES

You’ve changed a life.

Thank you for ensuring –
a child is not left alone at court,
a mother knows her rights,
and a refugee family is getting a new start.

Your one-time contribution of $5 helps the most vulnerable people immigrating to the United States.

Your compassion makes a difference. Thank you.

In Solidarity,

Your Family at RAICES

Joan said, “I almost never give on Giving Tuesday, and had deleted gazillions of emails, but I really like these folks.  Gave only $5.  You think I’ll give again?  You bet.  (Was tempted to empty my checking account. 🙂 )”

Are your donors saying, “Yes, I’ll give again any time they ask”?

Take a tip from Joan. Work on your thank-you emails and letters now if you want repeat donors in 2020.

Fundraising Tuesday: How NOT to Raise Funds

November 13, 2018 by Dennis Fischman Leave a Comment

My friend Joan Hill received an email from an organization that bill itself as a grassroots movement to elect Democrats who will pass Medicare For All.

She was so turned off by the email, she wrote me: “I support Medicare for All, I love Cong. Pramila Jayapal who founded this movement, and I have just unsubscribed.”

I know you don’t want that reaction from your supporters!

What did Medicare For All do to lose Joan? They took her for granted.

Here’s their email:

Subject: Joan, we keep emailing!

We emailed you on Saturday.

We emailed you yesterday.

And now we’re emailing you again.

Joan, we wouldn’t keep emailing you if it wasn’t critically important!

The only way we can elect a Progressive Majority is if we get 175 more donations by tomorrow!!

But our records show you haven’t donated yet. Is this right, Joan?

ELECT A PROGRESSIVE MAJORITY

JOAN HILL | Massachusetts DEMOCRAT

DONATE $5 NOW ➡︎

GOAL: 500 DONATIONS | DEADLINE: 24 HOURS

It’s go time,

Medicare For All PAC

Do you see what I see in this email?

  • Medicare For All PAC tried to guilt her into donating. They never asked.
  • It’s all about the organization. It’s not about her.
  • She should be the hero of the story. Instead, she’s getting the blame.

No wonder they lost Joan’s support!

After the election, get your donor’s vote

To be fair, a PAC is not the same as a nonprofit. Perhaps this PAC decided it was 2018 or never. They had an election to influence, and it was November 6. A donation by November 7 would be irrelevant.

Your nonprofit is not in that position. You want to go on, long after Election Day.

Your “campaign” for end-of-year donations may just be beginning…or for some small nonprofits, it may not even begin until after Thanksgiving.

And the value of that donor to your nonprofit is not the donation they give today, or even all the donations they give in 2018. You want them as a loyal donor, because their lifetime value will far exceed what they can give in a single year.

Do what it takes to keep your donors for a lifetime.
