Thank-You Thursday: A Sweet Gesture

March 5, 2020 by Dennis Fischman Leave a Comment

Central Square Theater TY

You pay for your tickets and you go to see the show, and an usher greets you and shows you to your seat. Before you can even sit down, you find a handwritten note on your seat. And chocolates! Sweet!

Are you in a good mood to watch the performance? Yes. Will you be coming back? Most probably!

That’s how Central Square Theater in Cambridge, MA treats its subscribers. Are you treating your donors that well?

When a donor “buys the ticket” by making a donation, is your nonprofit letting them seat themselves, unnoticed? (In other words, letting your website send them an auto-acknowledgment and a form letter.)

Or are you welcoming them with a handwritten note?

Writing or personalizing thank-you notes will make you feel good. It will make your Board members feel they’re a part of the fundraising without having to ask for money.

Most important, personal attention will make your “subscribers” feel at home, so they can settle in to watch your nonprofit’s “performance.” If they’re glad they gave this time, they will tell other people…and give again next season.

P.S. Be a sweetheart to your supporters. Valentine’s Day is over, and chocolates are cheap!

TY Thursday: A Thank-you Letter that Donors Will Remember

January 22, 2020 by Dennis Fischman Leave a Comment

Happy 2020. How did your end-of-year appeal go in 2019?

Thanks for being awesomeThe first order of business in 2020 is to send the ideal thank-you letter.

If your letters are already in the mail, congratulations! You’ve started persuading donors they did the right thing when they gave to you–and convincing them to give again in 2020!

But maybe you’re feeling guilty because it’s the middle of January and you haven’t sent out thank-yous for those gifts you got in December?

Never fear! If you take just a little more time, you can write a thank-you letter that donors will remember and love.

Here’s what you do:

  1. Make it personal. Knowing what the donor gave, and how often they gave in the past, is just the start. Know what they like to be called. And as often as you can, say something that makes them feel seen. A Personal Letter is Better Than a Personalized One!
  2. Tell a story. If the appeal letter told a story (and I hope it did), then refer back to it. “Emily Donor, you are already helping Mary Client these ways!” If you didn’t before, tell a story now. Make the donor feel the difference they have made.
  3. Ask a question. Or two, or three: definitely not many, but just enough to help you keep on getting to know the donor. (Save the answers to your survey questions in your donor database or CRM.)

If you are saying to yourself, “Where am I going to find the time?”, think about asking your Board members to write a personal note on the letters. Many of them will prefer writing thank-you notes to any other form of fundraising.

And for your next appeal, think about the thank-you letter at the same time you think about the ask!  (If you need expert help making sure your thank-you’s and your appeals touch your donors’ hearts, drop me a line at [email protected]. The initial consultation is free.)

Let’s make 2020 a great year for your nonprofit and your donors!

TY Thursday: How to Create a Repeat Donor

December 19, 2019 by Dennis Fischman Leave a Comment

“They must have been listening to you!”

My friend Joan used to work in the nonprofit sector before she retired. She still takes a keen interest in the mail and email you send her. Often, sad to say, she passes along examples of really bad nonprofit communication.

I’m happy Joan and I can share an example of what TO do, instead.

Subject: [RAICES] Thank you for your donation

thank you from RAICES

You’ve changed a life.

Thank you for ensuring –
a child is not left alone at court,
a mother knows her rights,
and a refugee family is getting a new start.

Your one-time contribution of $5 helps the most vulnerable people immigrating to the United States.

Your compassion makes a difference. Thank you.

In Solidarity,

Your Family at RAICES

Joan said, “I almost never give on Giving Tuesday, and had deleted gazillions of emails, but I really like these folks.  Gave only $5.  You think I’ll give again?  You bet.  (Was tempted to empty my checking account. 🙂 )”

Are your donors saying, “Yes, I’ll give again any time they ask”?

Take a tip from Joan. Work on your thank-you emails and letters now if you want repeat donors in 2020.
