TY Thursday: Gratitude–It’s a Gift

The first step your nonprofit ought to take to show your gratitude to donors is sending out the ideal thank-you letter, within forty-eight hours of receiving the donation. That will already make your donors happy.

The second step is to make a plan to thank the donors throughout the year. Beginning with a welcome packet, and continuing with reports that show the impact of their donations throughout the year, you can make donors glad they gave and eager to hear from you again.

What about sending donors a gift in return? Is it a good idea to include a premium when you ask (or to reward their donation afterward with something tangible)? Or not?

The Gifts I Got For Giving

Judging by my mail, many nonprofits think including a good way to say thank you–sometimes, in advance–is by giving me something I can use.

I’ve received:

  • Return address labels from the Southern Poverty Law Center, Hadassah, Amnesty International, and even from AAA
  • Bumper stickers from the National LGBTQ Task Force, Keshet, and Planned Parenthood
  • A recipe for Iced Hibiscus Tea with Dark Spices from UNRWA
  • Sticky notes from Partners in Health

Women to Women International has plied me with multiple gifts: a notepad, a set of cards and envelopes, and even offered me a handmade friendship bracelet made by a woman in Rwanda (in return for a gift of $20 or more).

It’s worth noting that I’ve only ever given to about half of these good causes! Clearly, for my wife and me, expressing gratitude through premiums is not a useful fundraising tactic.

But are we typical that way?

The Psychology of Getting Paid

There’s a famous psychology experiment in which two sets of participants are asked to do exactly the same tasks. The only difference: Group A are told they’ll be paid a small amount for doing the work. Group B are doing it for free.

After the task is done, the psychologists ask: How interesting did you find the tasks? Do you think they were useful? Would you be willing to do them again?

The answers are extremely relevant to us as fundraisers!

The paid group found the tasks less interesting and less useful than the group who did the work for free. The paid group were also less likely to want to do the work again in the future.

Why did getting paid make a difference? The psychologists believe that Group A told themselves a story about the tasks: “I’m just doing it for the money.”

Group B wasn’t getting paid, so they had to come up with a different explanation. They found something interesting and worthwhile about the tasks–because surely they wouldn’t be doing something that was boring and without purpose!

Do donors look at giving the way these participants looked at their tasks? And if so, which story do you want donors to be telling themselves about your organization?

I gave for the note cards (or bumper sticker, or bracelet). I don’t really support the organization all that much. I might not give again unless they make me a better offer. or

I gave because something about this organization moved me. They’re the kind of group I support, and so I might give again, the next time they ask.

The choice seems clear. But what do the experts say?

Do Premiums Help You Get & Keep Donors?

“Organizations believe that offering thank-you gifts increases charitable donations, but they actually reduce donation amounts,” says George Newman, assistant professor of organizational behavior at the Yale School of Management. (Therefore, Jay Love of Bloomerang recommends you spend your money on staff time to call and say thank you, instead!)

On the other hand, “Premiums can drive significant, incremental fundraising success in donor acquisition, reactivation, and retention programs,” according to Michael Kulpinsky of Innovaire Communications. “Premiums that offer strong mission-based tie-ins worked the best.”

Neesha from Causevox wants you to remember that last point. “Extrinsic fundraising gifts make people feel selfish,” she says, and you want them to feel generous. “Don’t use them as an incentive for first-time givers or to people who are not actively involved. You’ll be encouraging a bad habit.”

Instead, if you do use premiums to show gratitude to donors,  give them “goods that reflect the direct impact of your work.” Like that friendship bracelet from Women to Women I mentioned, or “a personal letter from a child who you sponsored for her education.”

My expert opinion? If you are a smaller nonprofit, there are other ways to express your attitude of gratitude that you should start doing today.

Gratitude Can Be a Gift in Itself

The message on the outside of the bold blue envelope read, “Your Certificate of Appreciation is enclosed.”

Look at what I saw when I opened the envelope.

It’s an actual certificate, like one you might put up on your wall. It’s signed by the President of the Greater Boston Food Bank, Catherine D’Amato. It uses a photo of three smiling faces to make Rona and me feel good about what we gave.

And right under the title, it actually says, “With deep gratitude.”

Even if I don’t hang it on a wall–even if it goes into the recycling bin–this piece of paper makes a greater impression on me than all the return address labels in the world.

And it doesn’t make me feel like I got paid for giving. It makes me feel I was thanked.

Fundraising Tuesday: 3 Steps to Set Up Donation Payment Processing

You’ve made an excellent fundraising appeal to your target group of potential donors. They’re heading to the link on your marketing content to get to your donation page. You’ve done everything right up to this point. The only thing left is for your team to process the payment and accept their donation. But that’s crucial–both for your nonprofit and for the satisfaction of the donor.

According to Double the Donation’s giving statistics, online giving grew by 12.1% over 2020. As more supporters give online, depending on a donation payment processor has become more popular and integral. The processor you choose manages your online transactions, and every nonprofit professional should understand how their payment software affects your fundraising goals.

There is no time like the present to upgrade your own online payment process and increase donation completion! Here are the steps you can take to get the most out of your payment processing system:

  1. Explore how your payment processing platform works for you
  2. Understand how your payment processor fits into the donation journey
  3. Integrate your existing data with your new payment processing system

1. Explore how your payment processing platform works for you

First, let’s review some vocabulary. A payment provider manages your organization’s payment processor software. The provider oversees transactions between your organization and its supporters.

But not all processors are made the same. You can choose a more general one like PayPal, but it might not have the specific features that nonprofits depend on.

You’ll want a provider that ensures accurate donor data, manages recurring gifts, and secures data received. Some other considerations you have to remember when it comes to your payment processor include:

  • Dedication to fundraising. Again, payment processing is fundamental to your online fundraising efforts. Without this to facilitate your transactions, you will miss out on donations.

 

  • Data security and fraud prevention. The payment processor you choose, its gateway, and its ACH network should all be secure. After all, they handle your donors’ sensitive financial information. If you experience a data breach, it will harm your nonprofit’s reputation. It’s worth it to invest in a processor with high-security options.

 

  • Easy integration with your tech stack. The payment processor you invest in should integrate well with your nonprofit’s tech stack. For example, if you have Salesforce apps like these, you’ll have an accurate transfer of donor data between your payment processor, donation software, and CRM.

 

  • User experience. iATS Payments’ donation page guide reports that design and ease can make or break a donor’s experience with your organization when donating online. You don’t want to send users away from your site or prolong the giving process if it doesn’t have to be!

 

  • Recognizing your options. If you’re a new organization, looking into your options is important. Many platforms have various fees so it’s important to do your research. This Charity Engine software guide recommends a full review of all costs before you buy.

2. Understand how your payment processor fits into your donation journey

To understand how your processor works in your donation process, take some time to map the donation journey. From appeal to landing on your donation page, make sure you use the best practices to make it easy. Here’s how it should go:

  • A supporter makes a donation on your online page. Your appeal worked, and your donor makes a payment through your online donation tool. Your processor will save sensitive personal and financial information to your CRM. It’s important that the data is accurate because it’s used for future outreach. You’ll want to address donors by name and send thank you notes to build your relationship.
  • The gift is transferred through the payment gateway. From here, the payment is sent to a third-party processor or aggregator. Here, the payment is either approved or denied. The payment can be rejected if it appears fraudulent or cannot be completed. In most cases, donations are received by the processor if approved.
  • Your payment processor completes a transfer request through the ACH network. This is how your software charges your donors for their payment. If they’re paying with debit, it goes through as an ACH debit payment from their bank account. If they paid with a credit card, the ACH payment request is transferred to the donor’s card provider.
  • Your organization receives the payment. When this process is complete, the funds land in your merchant account. Your merchant account, provided by the payment provider, is cashed out into your main bank account. This is where the perks of a dedicated payment processor come into play; you’ll receive your funds more quickly when that is the case.

By identifying your donor’s payment journey, you can see how having a dedicated donation payment processor is beneficial. When it’s integrated with your CRM, you can access your information easily, and you’ll receive your payment that much more quickly!

3. Integrate your existing data with your new payment processing system

When you choose your donation payment processor, there are steps your organization should take when setting up. Of course, this process can be different for each, but there are a few items to expect when setting up for the best results.

Understand how to prepare

Before you purchase your new payment processor, do your research on what setup is required from your team before you commit. For example, make sure that your new donation payment software can work well with your website and CRM. Then, check that your new processor can properly import and read existing data. Additionally, recognize your team’s skills and determine if you need help setting up your platform. If done on your own, you may risk serious mistakes that could cost you data.

Export your existing data

Once you’ve got a handle on how your donation processor works, start your data transfer process. You’ll do this by encrypting and exporting your existing transaction data from your old payment processor. If your chosen software has integration capabilities, you’ll get to skip this step, because it’s automated!

Optimize your donor profiles

Once the data is transferred, provide additional information to your new software provider. For example, talk about how recurring donations work for you. They’ll need to know the following:

  • Donors’ names
  • Previous gift amounts
  • Giving frequency
  • ID numbers

If your team practices good data hygiene, it’ll be easy to export this information.

Let your provider complete your data migration process

You will complete the transfer by double-checking the data from your old processor or CRM. They’ll ensure that data regarding recurring donations are synced without error. This way, your donor’s giving preferences and information are not lost in translation when switching.

Work with your processor’s support team

Smaller organizations may struggle with setting up their processor safely on their own. You must leave your lines of communication open to your donation software vendors. They’ll be able to provide one-on-one support throughout the process.

 

When your team takes steps to transfer your data and learn how your product works you’ll be good to go with fundraising online!

No matter what the endeavor, it’s never a good idea to have “all of your eggs in one basket.” When it comes to fundraising for nonprofit organizations, multiple avenues for generating revenue means less risk of interruptions in the donation stream.   1. Food: small-budget items that can generate significant dollars; fun pasta, pizza kits, candy, or frozen foods
  2. Outdoor Greenery: the perfect “homegrown” community fundraiser; flower bulbs or Christmas trees – every house needs both!
  3. Home Accessories: great for meaningful gifts or inspirational décor; you can sell candles, kitchen gadgets, home accessories and other items for the household

Product fundraisers are a great way to get your creative juices flowing! Nowadays most product companies offer online ordering and home delivery, so distribution is simple and hassle free.  If you need a dose of inspiration, here is the story of a young man who thought inside the box to create a successful pizza fundraiser during the pandemic.

 

CONNECTING WITH UNTAPPED SUPPORTERS

Upscale annual fundraising events are an effective way to attract deep-pocketed supporters, but unique product fundraisers offer an affordable option for countless untapped donors at every level.

A wide variety of products can be offered throughout the year. (Some items can be tied to the holidays; others will entice participants no matter when they are presented.) What a great way to develop a year-round connection with people through products!

  • Reach new supporters with low price-point affordable offerings
  • Create an opportunity to have fun and interact with supporters
  • Give supporters a way to secure a gift for themselves or to those they love

GENERATE EXPOSURE ON SOCIAL MEDIA

Consider this: No one is going to post a photo of a check they’ve written to a nonprofit on their social media platforms. But, they may very likely show off a fun product they received through your fundraiser!

Let’s revisit the ideas presented earlier and imagine the social media possibilities:

  1. Food: lots of posts featuring kids eating fun pasta or colorful lollipop “bouquets” and cute snaps of adults enjoying a childhood treat for a good cause
  2. Outdoor Greenery: your supporters can share photos of their new bulbs on Instagram and follow up with each other about their plants’ progress
  3. Home Accessories: neighbors alert each other on Facebook about where to buy cute candles for friends and family

 In our own fundraising business, we find that fun, unique products spark positive conversations not only on social media but also at the dinner table. Talk about a rewarding combination!
